Farm Happenings for September 5, 2023

Posted on September 1st, 2023 by Kimberly Decker

Greetings from a very happy farm.  The cool weather this week has us all smiling and laughing a lot more than the last week of the heat; isn't it amazing how a little change in the weather can make such a profound difference in our attitude?

The crops loved it too: the beets, carrots, daikon, and turnips are all growing like crazy, and even the tomatoes seemed grateful.  The squash and sweet potatoes are not as thrilled, but they are ok, as long as the days are still above 75.

Meanwhile, pizza night was a treat; we lit a fire toward the end of the evening, and enjoyed sitting around it in the cool weather.

Plastic mulch beds for overwintered strawberries

All of this to say that one of my favorite things about living in the Ozarks is the four seasons; I love them all, and I especially enjoy the time of change as one transitions to another.  In many ways it feels the same to me as traveling.  The experience of new sights, new warm or cool breezes, even snow and ice, ignites my sense of wonder.  One of my favorite sights is a thunderstorm forming up, or rolling over the horizon, bringing a sudden change from sunny to dark, warm to cold, still to windy.

I hope you've been able to enjoy the cool interlude, and I'll hope you'll come join us sometime in the next two months for Pizza Club, as we wind down the season.

Thanks,

Curtis
