Farm Happenings for July 18, 2023

Posted on July 14th, 2023 by Kimberly Decker

The heat is on, and it's starting to have an impact on the garden.  There are just a few heads of lettuce this week, and they will not be around long, our chard was eaten by the blister beetles, and the kale is nearing the end of the road as well.

Meanwhile, we got the last of the potatoes out of the ground, which is always exciting, the tomatoes are looking better, and the cantaloupe from the Amish fill the melon-shaped hole in my heart ;-). We did get a nice rain a couple of nights ago, and it looks like we might get another this evening, which is great for the garden, and especially some of the summer cover crops we grow to feed our soil between batches of vegetables, particularly where we're not quite ready for fall crops, but have harvested the summer crops already.

The cover crops (like buckwheat, sunflowers, sunn hemp) don't get priority water allocation, so it's always nice when we get a good rain event to help them get going.  Meanwhile, we are starting to prep beds for fall crops like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and others, and the moisture is helpful for that as well.

Time to get back out there, it's cooled off a bit, and I'm hoping to get a few more seeds in the ground before it rains.  Enjoy summer, and I hope you're able to find a creek to soak in this weekend.

Thanks,

Farmer Curtis
