Weed, Harvest, and Process Garlic, Repeat.

Posted on July 31st, 2020 by Justina Soltys

Dear Spoon Full Farm Family,

It's hot, isn't it? It hit 103 degrees on this past Tuesday, and it's been just as hot the entire week. We've been notoriously applying sunscreen all day long, as well as ending most of our days by taking a dip in the Yakima River. This time of year has been keeping us busy, we've been:

Weeding a particularly vivacious patch of grass and other notorious weeds in the zucchini, eggplant, and carrots;

Harvesting upwards to 100 pounds of Lady Han peppers for our fermented hot sauce, Sun Sauce, in a week;

Putting fields to bed for the summer, which involves mowing down old crops, and putting in cover crops to improve soil fertility and avoid soil erosion (especially with winds to 40 mph.);

Endlessly harvesting greenhouse tomatoes. We will harvest our first field tomatoes (!) in the next couple of days. We are about to be swimming in Red Bomb cherry tomatoes (you are able to add a pint of these tomatoes in your share this week);

and processing (essentially cleaning) our 2020 garlic, one of our favorite tasks of the year (as we are able to hide from the sun for a little bit). You'll be able to add heads of garlic to your share this week as well.

There goes another week in the books. Everyone is sweaty, and everyone needs a massage but we will all sleep really well tonight.

We hope you are enjoying the abundance that summer provides.

Happy Friday!

Wishing you good health,

Your Spoon Full Farmers
