Week 6 -- July 21

Posted on July 21st, 2020 by Kristine Hammel

Ask any market gardener and they will tell you -- July is INTENSE!

We are harvesting lots (yipppee!!), taking care of crops through pruning, trellising and yes, some weeding. And, 'tis the season for planting for autumn crops. Meanwhile, the days are hot, long and dry.

Fortunately, we have been blessed with some gentle showers over the past week or so and on Sunday with a downpour. So the dry part is less of a concern now. And we are appreciating this lull in the heat.

What gets us through these intense days? Harvesting lovely produce sure helps. So do evenings at the beach to cool down and rest.

And a really good team makes all the difference.

We are very fortunate in  that respect this year. Katy joined the team in April. She has been keeping the greenhouses full of transplants for months. Elaine joined us in early June. To beat the heat, she has been starting at 6 am to prune and trellis the tomatoes and cucumbers, which are looking great. Magali arrive in early July. She saved the potatoes from an onslaught of Colorado Potato Beetles. All together, we are planting, harvesting and packing lots of veggies several days per week.

THANK YOU TEAM!
