CSA Week 24

Posted on November 12th, 2020 by Amy Philson

This is it!  The final week in this CSA season.  This year has been a challenging one in many ways, but it has also brought a lot of good with it.  In this season of Thanksgiving, your farmers are thankful for health and the ability to grow food for our communities.  We are also thankful for you who entrust us to provide healthy food for your families.

Winter CSA:  You may have received an email yesterday about your Winter CSA Share if you usually pick at one of the locations that we deliver to in the winter.  If you would like to make any changes to that order or cancel it, simply click on the link in the first paragraph.  Orders will be finalized on Monday, so you have all weekend to make changes.  If you did not receive an auto-renew email and you would like to pick up a Winter CSA Share in Butler, Franklin, Grove City, Hermitage, Meadville, or Slippery Rock, you can sign up here.  For those of you who aren't close to these communities, we are very sorry that we don't have enough products to continue deliveries to you through the winter, and we hope you will join us again next year.

Some of you will receive garlic in your shares this week from Glacial Till Farm.  This garlic is normal size, very different from the surprisingly small garlic some got a couple of weeks ago from CD Farm.  While the garlic was harvested in July, we usually save it for late fall and winter CSA Shares.

This week Glacial Till Farm planted next year's garlic.  Garlic is the final crop we plant in our growing season, consequently it’s the first crop we planned for 2021. We will continue to harvest and tend our winter crops as long as possible, however this is the start of planning and preparation for the 2021 growing season.

Jumbo kohlrabi is back this week.  And we also have jumbo butternut squash.  This squash is large enough for your pumpkin pies AND for roasted squash or butternut squash soup (or maybe all three!).  Here is my favorite recipe for pumpkin pie using real foods.  I almost always use butternut in my pumpkin pies and everything else that calls for pumpkin.

Mushrooms are on sale again this week.  If you're adding them as extras, Lions Mane are a whopping $3.00 OFF per pound or $1.00 off per clamshell.  Blue Oyster and King Trumpet are $1.00 off/lb or 50 cents off/clamshell, also available in the Webstore if you don't see them as options here on Harvie.  We also have Shiitakes in the Webstore

Baked goods this week include Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese IcingEnglish Muffin Bread, and Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut Muffins from Dinner Bell Farm.

We will be sending out a survey via email in the next couple of weeks asking for your honest opinions about this year's CSA.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey to help us improve for next year.  We really appreciate feedback (both good and bad) from our customers.

Again, THANK YOU from all of your farmers for a great season.  We wish you a blessed Thanksgiving and health for you and your families.
