Spring CSA Week 13 - May 24

Posted on May 18th, 2023 by Amy Philson

**I will be out of town this week, so I am finalizing shares on Monday so I can print packing lists before I leave.**

It's our FINAL WEEK of Winter/Spring CSA, and our final week on Harvie.  As we've been announcing lately, we are moving to our new store on Local Line beginning in June.  Be sure to use up any credits you have in Harvie this week!

I am really excited about some new perks coming just for CSA members!  We are working an an A-Z Veggie Guide that tells you about veggies and give tips on storing them and using them.  Secondly, we are launching a members-only Facebook group where we will post recipes, let you know what's going on at the farms, share kitchen tips, and have some fun contests.  This is in addition to all the yummy produce and other local foods coming your way in the coming months.

Our farmers are reporting slow growth in their veggie fields this spring.  We usually have a lot more variety by now, including radishes and scallions, but they were stalled out during the weeks of cold and clouds and haven't caught up to where they should be yet.  But we should have more variety by June.

This Week's Features

  • Full Moon Mushrooms are back!  Blue Oyster, King Trumpet, and Lions Mane.  Plus we have Shiitakes again this week from Raber Farm.
  • Asparagus!!!  40 lb. total from Mickley Farm and Detweiler Farm.  Grab it quick!
  • Spring Greens Mix from Glacial Till Farm.  You know you've been craving it.
  • It's the final week for Ramps for the year.  Just 15 bags available.
  • Rhubarb from Detweiler Farm and Bushel & a Peck Farm.
  • Fiddleheads and Cattails are here again.  Have you tried 'em yet?
  • Hummus flavors this week are Original, Garlic, and Chipotle.
  • Butter made from raw milk.  It's soooo yellow because the cows are munching on fresh grass.
  • Cod and Spicy Salmon Burgers are back in stock.

Farm News

Derek from Glacial Till Farm loves his two-wheeled cultivator.  It moves quickly along his rows of veggies, uprooting small weeds before they can overtake the veggies.

Spur Hollow Farm has been a flurry of activity.  Jeff installed a new irrigation system. What a beautiful thing it is to have water at the push of a button. The vegetables are truly loving it!

Also at Spur Hollow Farm (and all of the other farms growing produce...), trays of Lettuce before they are planted into the soil. We start our seeds in these soil block trays and transplant out the lettuce 3 or 4 weeks later to give them a head start in the garden.

Recipes

Sticky Sesame Shiitakes calls for dried shiitakes that you reconstitute, but we can start with fresh mushrooms!  Serve over rice or cauli rice, along with sauteed green pac choi and ramps, and sprinkle with garlic chives.  Liquid aminos is a healthier substitute for soy sauce.  I use coconut aminos in all of my Asian cooking.  In fact, I buy it by the 1/2 gallon or gallon!

Sauteed Fiddleheads with Garlic Lemon Butter is a delicious accompaniment to fish or chicken.  Or serve them with pasta for a vegetarian option.

Easy Homemade Ramen is a simple meal that can be adjusted to the veggies you have on hand.  I like to serve it with pea shoots and garlic chives.  Don't forget to order eggs!  To make soft boiled eggs for ramen in the Instant Pot, I set it to cook 0 minutes on low pressure and release the pressure immediately, then plunge in ice water.

Thank you all for joining us for Winter/Spring CSA.  We hope you have been nourished by the food that we lovingly raise for you.

If you haven't already done so, it's time to sign up for Summer CSA!
