End of Season Reflections

Posted on October 12th, 2018 by Curtis Millsap

HARVIE IS HAVING SOME TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES, THERE ARE A LOT OF DOUBLES IN YOUR SHARES.  PLEASE EDIT YOUR SHARES THIS WEEK!!!

IN TWO WEEKS WE'LL BE SENDING OUT AUTO-RENEW NOTICES! THIS MEANS THAT IF YOU DON'T OPT OUT, YOUR CSA SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE RENEWED FOR SUMMER 2019.  KEEP YOUR EYES OUT FOR THAT NOTICE IF YOU WANT TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE CSA.

At the end of each Community Supported Agriculture season we take a moment (between all the other hectic business crying for attention this time of year), to reflect on what our community support means.

We look at the economic aspects; we are able to pay our staff, purchase seeds and supplies, pay utilities, pay mortgages, and even invest in capital improvements during the financially lean months of January, February, March, and April, when our expenses outpace income from farmers market sales, because of your financial support.

We also consider the environmental impact your investment has; we are able to focus time and energy on keeping soil in place, rather than eroding into the stream. We’re able to take on the considerable risks of growing without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides, because your have committed to support us, even through occasional crop failures. Our farm is a diverse patchwork of environments, with woodland, field, ponds, and un-mown grassland. Having reliable support year after year allows us to keep our farm diverse, and spend time managing to improve our local environment.

Finally, we consider the social impact on us and you as we mutually commit to one another, season after season.   We know that the work we do matters in part because you also value it, and because it serves your families. We love that the clean, delicious vegetables we are growing go to members who we know and have a connection to.   In a small but important way, we are forming community with you all, and that is perhaps the impact that we appreciate the most.

Thanks for supporting your farmers,

Curtis, Sarah, and the rest of the crew at Millsap Farm.
