Sweet Potato Digging Time! Farm Happenings for October 17, 2023

Posted on October 13th, 2023 by Kimberly Decker

What a glorious autumn we're having!!!  Warm days, cool nights, and blue skies make for happy farmers and happy plants.  We're enjoying the delicious greens, the return of carrots, lots of beets, and beautiful spinach.  Apples continue to delight, with fresh additions from the orchards up north, and the Amish grown white sweet potatoes are a pleasant difference, less sweet and more starchy; I prefer them for fries and other savory dishes over their orange cousins.  For a fantastic salad, roast diced sweet potatoes and beets until slightly crispy, and serve them over a bed of greens with chevre or feta, and sliced apples.  The combination of sweet, salty, crunchy and smooth makes for a happy mouth.

This time of year is a great time to appreciate the wonderful community of people we get to work with on our farm; from full-time, long-term employees like Kimby, who has been working alongside us for more than a decade, to new part-timers who come out to experience working on a farm for the first time, it's a joy to get to share this place and calling.  Community has always been a driving force on this farm, and continues to be one of the main motivators for me to stay the course; I love the people I get to work with, and I think providing a caring, loving, and respectful workplace is a good way to show my appreciation for them.  Thank you for helping me create and maintain that place by being a CSA member.  You are an important part of this community, and we could not do it without our CSA members.

Speaking of helping on the farm; WE NEED YOUR HELP!  if you're available, we'd love to have your help on Saturday the 21st, as we dig the remaining sweet potatoes, break up garlic for seed, and plant onions and garlic. There will be work for every ability level, and age, old and young.  The forecast is for a beautiful fall day; sunny and 60 degrees!  We'll have a big pot of rice and curry for lunch, and we're anticipating it being a great time with friends and family.  We'll start at 8, and finish work at 12, with lunch to follow, feel free to come to all or part, and bring friends and family along: the more the merrier.   RSVP here; https://signup.com/go/OsZdXUO

Thank you,

Curtis
