Farm Happenings for February 17, 2023

Posted on February 14th, 2023 by Kimberly Decker

Hi! We are seeding veggies and flowers like crazy right now!  We make little square soil blocks, pop the seed in and place it in our "germination chamber" - a place with a little warmth and a lot of humidity.  As soon as the seed starts to germinate (usually the root or radical is seen first!), we pull it out and place it on our seedling table so it can get lots of sun (there's little light in the germination chamber).  Our seedling table is heated this time of year.   A bunch of little black water hoses snake around the top of the seedling table and a propane in-line heater heats up the water - the hot water then circulates through the tubes and warms up the soil of the newly germinated seedlings!  This helps the seedlings to grow a little quicker and also helps them to dry out a bit between waterings to prevent fungal diseases.  Some little baby kale plants that were seeded at the end of December and some lettuces made it out into the ground this week and as the weeks go on, we will be planting more and more as all the little seedlings start getting big enough to go outside (or in a plastic tunnel!).

Thanks for letting us be your farmers!
