Welcome to the Fall 2019 CSA

Posted on October 28th, 2019 by Curtis Millsap

Hey guys! for some reason, the bolivar shares didn't get renewed, and we didn't catch it until Mandy noticed that she didn't get an e-mail...  so here's us trying to catch up.  From here forward, everything should work more normally.

This is the first Fall CSA week of 2019, which means I should get a couple of housekeeping things out of the way;

First, the Fall CSA starts this Friday, November 1.  If you pickup on farm, you can choose from the buffet from 4-6 on farm, or pick up your share from the cooler from 6pm Friday to 8pm Sunday.  If you pickup at Rountree, your share will be there on Friday between 4 and 6.  If you have home delivery, your share will be delivered Saturday morning, between 8 and 12.  And of course, farmers market pickups will be at Farmers Market of The Ozarks, from 8-1 every Saturday (other than the holiday week of thanksgiving, when there will be a special evening market on Tuesday).

Second, a few notes about how Harvie decides what goes in your share; on Monday we create a harvest estimate, which is a list of which veggies we think we'll have, and what quantities.  Next Harvie sorts the veggies into your boxes, using the following rules:

  1. Product has a member preference of 5 (Loves) if it is marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  2. Product has a member preference of 4 (Really Likes) if it is marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  3. Product has a member preference of 3 (Likes) or no preference if it is marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  4. Product has a member preference of 5 (Loves) if it is marked as a Featured Product and not already TWO in share

  5. Product has a member preference of 2 (Will Eat) if it is marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  6. Product has a member preference of 5 (Loves) if it is not marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  7. Product has a member preference of 4 (Really Likes) if it is not marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  8. Product has a member preference of 3 (Likes) or no preference if it is not marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  9. Product has a member preference of 5 (Loves) if it is not marked as a Featured Product and not already TWO in share

  10. Product has a member preference of 2 (Will Eat) if it is not marked as a Featured Product and not already in share

  11. After this, it will aim to fill the share as best it can, assigning more multiples of products based on members greater preferences first

If you're like me, this looked like trying to read the rules to a somewhat complex board game.  The bottom line is that your preferences will be strongly expressed with this decision tree, while we also have some discretion in what the farm wants to get out into boxes.  For example, this week, we are featuring fennel, because we have to harvest it before it freezes hard on Thursday, and won't hold in our coolers for long.  On the other hand, some items, like ginger, are not featured, and lower on the list because they are still growing, and will hold in the greenhouses for a while yet, so there's no urgency to sending them out.  Meanwhile, your box should be full of the things you love.

If you haven't set your preferences, please do that now! It will really make a difference in what gets put in your farmshare.  And then, when you recieve you share e-mail, which should be Monday evening, feel free to swap and edit to your hearts content.

Thanks for joining us for Fall, hope you enjoy all these fresh veggies.
