Mid-April Farm Happenings

Posted on April 17th, 2019 by Mericos Rhodes

Dear Spoon Full Farm Family,

This week marks the beginning of irrigation season, here at the farm! Soon sprinklers will be whirring all over the farm, and drip lines will be dripping peacefully into growing garden beds.

All of this water means that we can put our chickens wherever we want, on the farm! (During winter, we are limited by the lengths of our hoses.)
Accordingly, we are placing our chickens on the most abused and depleted pastures on the farm. The previous owner's four draft horses spent much of their lives kicking rocks and eating every shred of green growth, on these fields. The earth needs help, here. Luckily, the chickens produce not only eggs, but also amazingly rich manure for the soil! On top of that, the chickens spread out cow manure and peck it clean of any insect larvae.

That's a win-win-win.

Happy Easter, Passover, or secular gathering time, to you and your family this weekend! May you enjoy your fresh eggs as much as the chickens enjoy hunting and pecking through green grass.

Love,

Spoon Full Farmers
