A First Freeze

Posted on October 10th, 2019 by Phoebe Autry

Hard freeze, its a day all farmers talk about as fall approaches and the days get shorter. Its a day that looms on the horizon, where we rush to get all the tomatoes and peppers harvested, or cover any greens that are still in the field. In some regards, its a day that marks the end of the season or at least the beginning of the end. Where the few tasks left are cleaning out frozen brassica stems from beds and locating all the hoses that have migrated around the farm all season long. And now as our climate changes and temperatures fluctuate, its a day that arrives without much predictably.

At Spoon Full, we experienced our first hard freeze of the year last night. We awoke this morning knowing that irrigation would have to be delayed until pipes warmed in the morning sun. We will jot this day down on our calendar to reference next season as we make plans for crops and animals.

As you may notice your boxes are filling up more and more with storage vegetables such as potatoes, winter squash and onions. We rely on these staples in the last few weeks of the season because they bring nourishing, comforting dishes into our kitchen to help warm from within.

As you look to winter, don't forget about our winter meat CSA, sure to bring lots more nourishing and comforting meals. Check out our website (https://www.spoonfullfarm.com/winter-csa) for signup information.

With love,

Your Spoon Full Farmers
