Apprentice Perspective

Posted on August 28th, 2020 by Phoebe Autry

Dear Spoon Full Farm Family,

This week, we're featuring a Farm Update written by one of our incredible apprentices Jalene. Our apprentices are crucial in bringing you produce each and every week, and we're excited to be able to share her perspective:

Whew. It sure feels like peak August around here. Produce is growing like crazy and we are busy trying to keep up! There's always more of something than we can eat while it's still fresh, so we try and preserve as much as we can! Separate from our delicious Fortune Ferments, we have enjoyed spending some community time together making things like canned tomato sauce, pickles, freezing jimmy nardelos, dehydrating lady hans, garlic, basil, apricots, apples…you name it.

August also brought some exciting news for the livestock crew. We had our first round of baseline soil testing done as we start an exciting new project with The Savory Institute and their Land to Market Program. The project aims to bring landscape assessment methodology and holistic management to track outcomes in biodiversity, soil health, and ecosystem function. This data-driven decision-making process will help us continue to live by our mission and stay Loyal to Soil.

Along with the kitchen bustling with produce activities, everyone has been trying to soak up as much summer as we can. River floats, hikes, camping, and coast trips have been the fun times off the farm. On the farm, Virgo season is a big one, 3 Virgos at Spoon Full! We celebrated our first birthday for Farmer Dooley this week with bocci ball on the lawn, stone fruit salad in our epic salad bowl, cuddles with Basil, and carrot cake.

As summer winds down, we can feel autumn in the air. Crisper harvest mornings and earlier chicken coop tuck-ins, a slower pace is on the horizon. With our first pumpkin spotted, Halloween plans featuring apple cider and jackolanterns (and of course Hocus Pocus) have already begun. We are looking forward to future plans and transformation.

Happy summer and happy eating!

-Jalene, for all the Spoon Full Farmers
