Winter CSA Week 7 - March 1

Posted on February 23rd, 2023 by Amy Philson

The big story, of course, is this crazy weather.  68 degrees as I write this blog, and a high of 30 tomorrow.  My spring bulbs are already sending green shoots up, so they will likely bloom a few weeks early this year.  These temperature swings are annoying for most people, but it's maple syrup season on our farm, so the drastic temperature swings are just what we like to see.  If it stays warm for too long, the sap will turn off and the season will be over.

Another big story is the train wreck in East Palestine, Ohio, that has spewed toxic chemicals onto the ground and into the air.  Thankfully, the winds traveled south of our farms, so our soil has been spared the fallout from the black cloud.  But we sympathize with those who are affected and are concerned about the long-term impact this will have on our area.

Summer CSA sign-up will be later this year because we are switching platforms (again!) before the new season.  We think the new system will be easier to navigate for most people, and it will be much less expensive for NWPA Growers, thus giving you more food for your money.

This Week's Features

  • New Pork inventory from Mickley Organic Farm, including hams in various sizes for your Easter dinner.  Plus bacon and sausage!  But act fast because inventory is limited.
  • Middlefield Cheese is back in stock in many flavors.
  • Fresh greens from Harmony Grove Farm, in limited supply because of lots of cloudy days.
  • Curry Hummus is the featured flavor this week.

Farm News

Your farmers are itching to get things planted!  We had our annual growers meeting this week to make plans for the coming season, and the veggie farmers were discussing what seeds they are starting in flats to be transplanted this spring.  Here's a pic at Glacial Till Farm on one of our recent warm days, getting the beds ready for planting.

At Bushel & a Peck Farm we have been tapping trees and collecting sap to boil into our delicious maple syrup.  Our whole family is involved in our farm work; below is a pic of our son tapping trees.  The weather for the next week is ideal maple weather, so we will stay busy with late nights boiling.

Recipes

Grab some chicken and mushrooms for your share and try this simple but delicious 30 Minute Chicken Mushroom Marsala.  My family loves this dish!

Vegetarian?  Try the Caramelized Onion, Mushroom, and Swiss Melt.

Remember to customize your share by Sunday night.  What will you choose to be in your box this week?
