CSA Week 12 August 24-25

Posted on August 18th, 2022 by Amy Philson

What a beautiful week it has been on our farms!  Warm days and cool nights make farm work more enjoyable.  Even though we are nearing the end of August (already!), this week marks the half-way point of our CSA season.  We are slowly transitioning some beds from summer crops to fall crops, while our long-season fall crops are starting to ripen.

You may notice a small difference when picking up your CSA share.  You will only see your full packing list on your box and not all of the additional pages that list each cold item separately.  We included them to alert you to cooler items that you need to grab, but since you should be in the habit of pulling your packing slip from your box and double-checking the list before you leave pickup, we can save paper and ink by only printing the master list.  So be sure to check your packing list for cooler items.

This week's features

  • Sweet corn from Detweiler Farm
  • Salad mix and lettuce from Spur Hollow Farm and Harmony Grove Farm
  • Fennel from Glacial Till Farm
  • Japanese eggplant from Glacial Till Farm (limited quantity)
  • Herbs and spices from Burlap & Barrel!  I introduced them a couple of weeks ago and added them to the store, but I forgot to add inventory!

Farm News

Spur Hollow Farm:  Arugula harvest this morning! Nothing is more satisfying than pest-free baby greens! This insect netting is a life saver.

Glacial Till Farm:  We decided to spend a couple of days at our New York retreat before fall harvest and cover crop seeding. stepping away from the field seems to be the only chance I get to read. That said four kids are demanding of my time so I figure I have about 4 early morning hours to cram this book into my head.

The Way Nature Intended:  You should smell the menthol and eucalyptus right now. Just wonderful! No clogged up sinuses here. Have you tried our Breathe Easy Decongestant Salve?  We use a base of organic coconut oil and shea butter so your chest, face and feet stay soft. Don’t forget the local beeswax. Who wants to apply a salve under their chapped nose and have that salve make it worse? This will help to heal the area while it’s helping you breathe.

Humble Bee & Tree Farm:  We have been busy this summer in our vegetable garden.  We are currently transitioning to a fall garden and extracting spring honey from our honeybee hives.  The kids like to help with the harvest!

Bushel and a Peck Farm:  We have some blue heeler dogs to give away.  They are one and two years old, and have come back to us because their adopted owners have family situations that won't allow them to keep the dogs.  If you know someone who is looking for an active dog that is extremely devoted to its owners, please contact me (Amy).

Are you a meal planner or a use-what-you-have cook?  I am a mixture of both.  I plan our weekly main dishes, which usually include lots of veggies, but for the side dishes I check to see what I have on hand.  If we have a meat main dish, I will serve 2-3 veggie sides along with it.  But if we have a veggie-centered main dish, then we usually just have one side dish.  It mostly depends on which veggies I choose:  if I'm serving beets then I am more likely to serve additional veggies because only some of us love beets.  But carrots or salad?  All of us will eat those without complaints.  I love the variety in my CSA share this time of year!

Have a great weekend!
