Winter/Spring CSA Week 11 April 27

Posted on April 21st, 2022 by Amy Philson

We're hoping that spring has finally sprung.  Our plants should take a big leap in growth with this weekend's warm temps.  Because of the cold and gray lately, some of the crops that we had planned aren't ready yet, but they are still growing.  This week we have enough produce to fill all of the Veggie Shares with only produce and eggs.  The Grocery Shares also have meats and other items built into the preliminary boxes.  We have lots of options to customize this week.

Event

If you are looking for something fun (and FREE) to do this Saturday, check out Earth Fest at The Macoskey Center at Slippery Rock University.  Autumn (our Social Media Manager) will be there selling a few of our products and talking to people about our CSA.  There will be a bunch of fun activities for kids and adults, live music, and more.

This week's features

The Way Nature Intended has added some new products to the store.  Several products are marked 20% off right now, just in time for Mother's Day gifts.  Sale items include Lip Scrubs, Foot Soak, Yoga Mists, and Cuticle Cream.

Moose Farm has added beef inventory.  Grilling season is upon us, so grab some steaks and ground beef patties to have on hand for a quick meal.

Ramp season is here!  We have ramps from Bushel and a Peck Farm and Raber Farm, so grab 'em while you can.  The season is short and will be gone before you know it.

Shiitakes are back from both Viele Farm and Raber Farm, as well as Lions Mane and Oyster from Full Moon Mushrooms.

Premium Salad Mix from Glacial Till Farm is back!  They only have 50 bags this week, so be sure to customize your share before all the extras are snatched up.

Farm News

Glacial Till Farm has been busy planting, planting, planting!  "The carrot seeds went in smooth tonight! In anticipation of the typical excessive rainfall of spring I tarped this winter kill cover crop a couple months ago during a relatively dry period. This allowed me to get seeding on schedule."  So instead of waiting for the field to dry up in the midst of typical spring rains, they planted carrots that will be ready to harvest in late spring.  They are planning to provide more carrots than last year since it is a favorite.

We had planned on having hakurei turnips in this week's shares, but they have not grown at all in the past two weeks.  They're just hanging out in the adolescent stage waiting for the sun.  Hopefully they will be ready next time.

Spur Hollow Farm

Our seedlings are getting ready to transplant! Head lettuce and broccoli will be transplanted into the field early next week!

Enjoy this beautiful weekend, and send good thoughts to all of our farmers as we are swamped with all of our spring work...and all of the challenges that we encounter daily.
