CSA This week and Happy New Year!

Posted on December 30th, 2023 by Dave Redfearn

We hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and will soon have a happy New Year!  We'll have winter veggies for you this week (Jan 4th and 5th, 2024!!!)

In the deep winter of the months of January and February, we do every other week deliveries before kicking back into weekly gear starting in March. Since you might get mixed up here are the dates for our every other week deliveries (Jan 4, Jan 18, Feb 1, Feb 15th and Feb 29th).  We'll be doing weekly pickups starting March 7.

The two-fold purpose of the winter slowdown is 1) Give the farmers some rest and 2) Give the crops time to grow.

For your farmers, these winter months are our chance to catch up on sleep, do some reading, writing and reflection, focus on our studies, organize the barn (?) and make preparations and plans for another growing season.

For the winter crops, these cold days with minimal daylight hours and clouds means they don't grow very quickly at all.  Crops like radishes which take around 21 days from seed to harvest in summer will take 80 or 90 days at this point in the year.  So we have to stagger the harvests and make sure we have plenty for you each harvest.  Growth starts speeding up in March, so then we get back to weekly harvest.

If you ate as many Christmas cookies as we did, then you'll be ready for some extra veggies this week. Remember, with every other week deliveries for the next couple months you'll need to be shopping for two weeks if you don't want to run out, so feel free to stock up as you need.
