Last CSA share Before Christmas

Posted on December 9th, 2023 by Dave Redfearn

Don't miss out on this last CSA share before Christmas.  The December 14/15th shares are the last shares before we take a short Christmas break.  The next CSA delivery will be January 4th and 5th of 2024!!!!  Wow, are you ready for the New Year??  If you want to feature some of our farm fresh veggies for Christmas, roots (potatoes, radishes, turnips, daikons, carrots etc) will have no trouble storing in the fridge until Christmas. Sweet potatoes also will store easily (just don't keep them in the fridge).

Winter is officially just around the corner, but we've been blessed with some pleasant temperatures.  We took advantage of a few nice days this week to get the garlic and onions planted for next year.  The hope is that we've planted them late enough that they'll start sending down roots but not let their shoots emerge from the surface before the really cold weather sets in.  It's a challenge to wait just long enough but not too long to plant them.  We shall see how next year's crop of garlic and onions look.  This past season's garlic and onions were both a disappointment because they emerged early and many got knocked out by the cold and dry weather we had late last winter.  The rain watering the garlic and onions in just after planting was a welcome blessing and a good start to these plants.  Hopefully we won't see anything popping out of the soil until March.

As real winter weather approaches, more and more of the crops you are receiving are coming from our heated and unheated high tunnels rather than the outdoor fields.  We still have some outdoor crops covered with frost blankets, but not much at this point.  So we are starting to settle into the winter CSA harvest routine.  To be honest, it's a lot more fun to harvest your greens from inside the relative warmth of the tunnels than out in the wet windy conditions of winter in the fields, so sometimes we feel a guilty pleasure in seeing our outdoor crops succumb to the icy fingers of winter.
