CSA Week 9 August 3-4

Posted on July 28th, 2022 by Amy Philson

Even though many people's thoughts have turned toward back-to-school, we are just entering into the second third of the growing season.  We have eight weeks behind us, leaving 16 more full of delicious local food for you.

We continue to add more peak of the summer veggies to boxes this week, so you have lots of variety to choose from.

For those of you who are on the every-other-week schedule, you missed the early sweet corn last week from Detweiler Farm.  If you're a sweet corn lover, you can look forward to more non-sprayed, naturally-grown corn in future weeks.

This week's features

  • New inventory from Middlefield Cheese.  This week's Cheese Share will be Smoked Cheddar.
  • Mushrooms!  Shiitakes (limited), Blue Oyster, and Lion's Mane
  • Tomatoes!  Detweiler Farm will mix a few orange and white varieties in with their traditional red slicing tomatoes.
  • Our first peppers of the season:  Hungarian Hot Wax Peppers from Detweiler Farm.  Bell peppers are still a week or two away.
  • Cucumbers are back, but limited quantities.  It just isn't a great year for cukes.
  • Hummus flavors this week are olive, garlic, chipotle, basil, and dill pickle.
  • Baked goods of the week are Double Chocolate Walnut Brownies and Lemon Zucchini Loaf Cake.

Harvie Tips

I'm repeating these basic tips for those who have every-other-week shares and those who don't always read this email.

For the best selection of items, make a point to customize your share Friday morning.  When planning shares, I reserve a portion of each product to be available for swaps, but some items will sell out quickly.  If you wait until Sunday to start customizing, you will find that the most desirable produce has been spoken for.  I customize my share on Friday morning, and then I make last-minute changes after I receive the reminder email on Sunday evening.  By then, I have a better idea what my week will look like, and I have (hopefully) planned my family's meals for the week.

Another tip that lets you see more of what you want is to tweak your preferences.  For example, if you continually see certain shelf-stable items in your share, but you would rather focus on meat and veggies right now, then rate those items lower in your preferences so Harvie doesn't put them in your share as often.  Just because you rate something as "Never Include" doesn't mean that you can't add it to your share whenever you want. Adjusting your preferences by the season gives you more control over what is planned for your share.

Recipe

I don't know if I've shared this recipe recently, but it's one of my go-to cabbage recipes.  It doesn't look spectacular on your plate, but it is soooo yummy.  I have converted several cabbage haters with this recipe.  All the flavors just work together for a delicious meal.  I always use ground beef instead of pork.  If you aren't familiar with coconut aminos, they are a healthier soy sauce alternative.  Here's the recipe:  https://dontwastethecrumbs.com/egg-roll-bowl/.  Now go add a cabbage to your cart!

This weekend promises gorgeous weather, but next week your farmers will be melting in the heat, so keep them in mind during the 90+ days.  Thank your farmers when you prepare fresh food for your family.
