CSA Week 2 June 15-16, 2022

Posted on June 9th, 2022 by Amy Philson

Even though this is Week 2 of the season, it's only the first week for some if you have a biweekly share or took a vacation day last week.  For those of you new to NWPA Growers, welcome!  If you have questions about your Farm Share and how this all works, please refer to your welcome email that you received when you signed up.  Harvie FAQ also has lots of answers in a searchable format.  And you can email me with questions, too.

If you're new, you may be wondering about the meaning of the letters after many of our products.  We use farm initials to note which farm products come from for our packing lists.  You can see the farm name listed with the product on the Share Customization page, but when packing lists are printed those details aren't listed.  So when we have radishes from both Glacial Till Farm (GT) and Spur Hollow Farm (SH), those initials help ensure that you're receiving the correct product in your box.  You may want to pay attention to which farms produce certain products because you may prefer the lettuce from one farm over another, so you can order that lettuce again.

For Week 1 we had 108 unique products that went into boxes, and that's with limited produce.  We are continuing to add more grocery items, and the variety of veggies will grow and change as summer moves forward.  Even though we double-check boxes when packing them, there will be errors throughout the season.  If you are missing something from your box or you receive a damaged item, please email me for a credit.  We want you to be happy with your Farm Share products.

This week's features

  • It's strawberry season!  Detweiler Farm does not spray their berries, nor do they fertilize with chemicals.  You can't beat the flavor of local berries picked at the peak of ripeness.
  • Cauliflower, broccoli, and asparagus are available in limited quantities, so customize early to catch them.
  • Baked goods this week are Carrot Cake Muffins and Cranberry Orange Cookies.
  • Garlic scapes will be around for just a few weeks.
  • Lots of greens to choose from!

Farm News

Spur Hollow Farm:  The cherry tomatoes are climbing the trellis string so quickly! Some of them are up to my stomach already. They are pruned for maximal yield and airflow around the base, and they should start producing here within 2 or 3 weeks!

Glacial Till Farm:  Just like Pavlov’s dogs my mouth begins to water at the sight of scapes. It’s scape season!

Recipes

Does pie intimidate you?  Try this Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp.  And check out our other rhubarb recipes here.
