Winter CSA Week 3 January 5

Posted on December 30th, 2021 by Amy Philson

Winter CSA Week 3 is coming up on Wednesday, January 5, so even though it's a holiday weekend, don't forget to customize your share.

Your farmers have transitioned into the slower pace of winter and are enjoying some family time, but farm work never stops.  Those of us with animals have daily care, and we even have new lambs on our farm.  Veggie farmers have been taking advantage of the mild December to prep their garden beds for next year, spreading compost and mulching to improve soil fertility.

I have been hard at work planning next summer's CSA season and arranging additional pickup locations.  We are also planning to expand our product line, bringing in more varieties of local foods.

Our biggest announcement is that Autumn Kellogg, the other half of Glacial Till Farm, has joined our team as our Social Media Manager.  Social media is something that I don't enjoy, so I've never devoted much time to maintaining our pages.  If you don't already follow NWPA Growers on Facebook and Instagram, I encourage you to do so.  Autumn will be posting recipes to make with your share, how-to's for Harvie, and lots more.  She loves to "meet" new people and engage in conversation, so head over there and say "hi."

This week's features

  • Lots of bibb lettuce from Harmony Grove Farm, as well as microgreens and an assortment of other greens
  • Cabbage (red and green), sweet potatoes, butternut, and more from Detweiler Farm
  • Kale and large garlic from Glacial Till Farm
  • Mushroom shares this week are chestnut, and we have some mixed oyster mushrooms available to add to your shares
  • Baked goods this week are croissants, mini sourdough loaf, oatmeal raisin cookies, and rosemary sea salt focaccia

Farm News

Glacial Till Farm:  Work on the propagation house is well underway. In the winter we reinvest into our farm. We continue to expand our infrastructure, this will help provide our community with delicious nutrient dense vegetables grown in living SOIL! The propagation house will expand our production window, increase our selection of vegetables and help boost our production quantity.  I also installed a rain catch system. I will use rainwater to create my vermicompost teas to inoculate my seedlings with biology this season.

Bushel & a Peck Farm:  Besides our store, Philson & Friends Artisanal Wares at Grove City Premium Outlets, we've been busy moving cattle and sheep from one farm to another to consolidate feeding for the winter.  Most of our animals are skittish, so the move involves setting up temporary fence and corrals to funnel them into the trailer.  Our store is open through this Sunday, and then we will spend a few days closing it down until next October.

Share customization ends Sunday at 11 p.m.  You can change things in your share any number of times throughout the weekend.  Popular items will sell out quickly, but someone may remove just what you want from their cart, so it's a good idea to check back more than once.

Your farmers wish you a happy and healthy 2022!
