CSA Week 19 October 13-14

Posted on October 7th, 2021 by Amy Philson

Auto-renew continues your subscription from one season to the next.  When your share is renewed, you will have a few days to make changes in size and add-on shares before the order is finalized.  So if you want to increase or decrease your share size, or add a ground beef share for the winter, watch your email for instructions about that.

Winter/Spring CSA is pay-as-you-go, so when your order is finalized this month to begin in December, you will only be charged for the first week, and then just before each delivery through the season.  Winter/Spring CSA is every two weeks (with a 3-week break over the holidays), so share sizes are a little larger.  We are offering both a regular share that is prebuilt with veggies according to your preferences, and also a full-grocery CSA that may be filled with anything from our stores, including meat, cheese, etc.  Of course, you always have the opportunity to customize your prebuilt share.

We are still looking for a winter pickup location for our Pittsburgh group, so if you know of an indoor location that would like to host us, please let me know.  Our members are mostly from the Frick Park/Squirrel Hill area, so a location not too far from there would be ideal.  We have a location in Bellevue, but we also need the Pittsburgh location to make the trip to the city.  In winter and spring we make all of our deliveries on Wednesday, and our smaller pickup locations are canceled until next June.

Features this week:

  • From Glacial Till Farm -- Premium salad mix, kale, hakurei turnips, radishes, and arugula
  • From Harmony Grove Farm -- bibb lettuce, spinach, celery, arugula, and pea shoots
  • From Detweiler Farm -- squash, potatoes, cabbage, peppers, broccoli, and more
  • From Spur Hollow Farm -- kale and scallions
  • From Dinner Bell Farm -- 7 grain bread, pumpkin scones, and applesauce cookies
  • Mushrooms -- blue oyster, king trumpet, and lions mane from Full Moon Mushrooms and shiitakes from Viele Farm (the shiitakes are only available as extras, not swaps)

Some items are limited quantities, so they might already be assigned to shares.  Check throughout the weekend to see if anyone swaps them out.

Mushroom shares this week are blue oyster on Wednesday and king trumpet on Thursday.

Have you seen meat prices increasing?  We have been seeing prices going up, up, up in the stores, but our meat prices haven't increased...yet.  Stock up on beef, pork, and chicken now to avoid the price increase that's coming.  The costs for all of our feed and supplies have gone up, plus butchering fees have increased, so your farmers are earning even less.  Remember that all of our beef is 100% grass fed, and our pork and chicken is pastured and fed non-GMO or organic grain.

Share customization ends Sunday at 11 PM.  And look for the Winter CSA announcement coming soon.

On behalf of your NWPA Growers farmers,

Amy Philson
