CSA Week 15 August 15-16

Posted on September 9th, 2021 by Amy Philson

Our featured photo this week of a volunteer sunflower plant comes from Spur Hollow Farm.  It sprouted up where chickens came through on pasture earlier in the summer. What a beautiful flower, which also is full of protein, fat, and the seeds are the first part picked out of the chicken feed.  But they missed this seed, and it sprouted in the pasture.

Upcoming schedule changes:

  • Shares will be finalized on Mondays on the following dates: 9/20, and 9/27.  I usually finalize them on Tuesdays, which triggers credit card payments and the email that says "Your Share is on its way!"  Because I will be off on Tuesday those weeks, payments will be processed on Monday, so if you use a debit card to pay for your share, please make sure you have enough in the account a day early to prevent the payment from being rejected.
  • I will be off 9/16, and our substitute driver will deliver that day as well.  I will be working on 9/15, and our regular driver will deliver that day.

Fall is on its way!  Our first of our squash is ready this week.  Delicata is a small variety, very sweet and easy to use.  The skin is edible, making it easy to slice and roast for Kale Salad.  We also like Maple Roasted Delicata Squash.  I love everything squash, so I can't wait until my box of goodies comes this week.

Also making appearances this week:  Sweet CornPremium Salad Mix, and Summer Crisp Lettuce.  And don't miss the Cantaloupe!

Farm News

Full Moon Mushrooms

With colder weather coming, we are glad to have our king trumpets back into production. Chestnuts coming next!  These mushrooms will be coming to CSA shares as soon as they have enough fruit.

Glacial Till Farm

This is a project I am working on that uses a specific blend of covers to prepare beds for carrot production. I’m developing data on this plot through next season. I’ve been working on adapting cover crop techniques that seamlessly integrate into market farming, an extension of my progress on my large farm where we are currently cover cropping over 1000 acres this fall.

Check out this beautiful cover crop of peas and oats. This application is post garlic production. This will be the very first beds of salad greens next season in early March.

Spur Hollow Farm

A view of our late-summer garden.  This week we are harvesting Summer Crisp Lettuce and Curly Kale for CSA shares.

As always, if you have received any produce that is damaged or of poor quality, please let me know so we can issue you a credit.  Sometimes a flawed product is overlooked when we are packing shares, and sometimes we send slightly damaged products when we don't have a substitute, hoping you can use some of it and let us know if you would like a credit.

Share customization ends Sunday night.  Do you like the new feature that sends you a reminder email Sunday evening that share customization is almost over?  I usually customize my share on Friday, and then tweak it Sunday evening after I have a better idea of what my week looks like.

It looks like a great fall weekend coming up, so get out and enjoy nature, and then share a healthy meal with your family or friends.

On behalf of your NWPA Growers Farmers,
