CSA Week 8 July 28-29

Posted on July 22nd, 2021 by Amy Philson

This week marks the 1/3 mark of this season's CSA.  Here are some new items this week (limited quantities, so they may not be in your box):

  • tomatoes from Detweiler Farm
  • green peppers from Detweiler Farm
  • purple kale from Grateful Life Farm
  • red cabbage from Spur Hollow Farm

We just received a new shipment from Wild for Salmon.  They are a Pennsylvania family-owned business that brings back wild-caught fish that they sustainably harvest off the coast of Alaska.  We have some old favorites like pollock and keta salmon, but we also added a few new items:

  • Pacific cod loins from Wild for Salmon
  • shrimp from Wild for Salmon
  • smoked salmon from Wild for Salmon
  • spicy salmon burgers from Wild for Salmon

Baked goods are back this week from Dinner Bell Farm.  This week's choices include Seven Grain Bread, M&M Cookies, and Pepperoni Rolls.  For now they are only offering baked goods every other week.

Mushroom shares this week are mixed blue oyster and pearl oyster mushrooms.

Glacial Till Farm

Garlic bed preparation began today, (actually 2 weeks ago). I am very excited to be partnering with the Macosky center at Slippery Rock University to provide practical hands on workshops for students. Garlic will be our first workshop, and I’m inspired to begin my next chapter in market farming in which I plan to include education, research and development, into the details of some of my systems culminating in expanding knowledge for future and current growers. My focus is on integrating soil building techniques into a profitable market garden with real world practical applications.

Grateful Life Farm:

(This update was written last Saturday, July 17.)  It has been a steamy, busy week!  We dodged many thunderstorms to harvest chickens, package chickens, scrub equipment, harvest rabbits, and repeat.  Tuesday night a strong burst came through our area right around 5 PM, when we typically move the chickens to fresh pasture.  We had to delay for over an hour while strong winds whipped trees and bushes, the power flickered several times, and massive sheets of rain poured down the windows.  On the path to the pasture, in an area that is a bit open and often has standing water, several large cherry trees had broken off and fallen and we had to go back to the house for the chainsaw to reach the pasture.  I was nervous as we drove around the corner, but no trees had fallen in the pasture and the chickens were safe. Our last batch of chicks arrived last week.  They are a week and a half old now!  Here they are enjoying feeding time.  Fortunately it has been warm enough that we don't have to worry about them getting chilled if the power goes out.

It's a short and sweet newsletter this week because I have family visiting from out of town.  Have a great weekend!
