CSA Week 9

Posted on July 31st, 2020 by Amy Philson

There's nothing like cute kids to grab your attention.  The Glacial Till Farm kids are building muscles harvesting the huge cabbage.

Weather fascinates me.  I love watching thunderstorms with all the clouds swirling around and the flashes of lightning.  The rain is refreshing and nourishing to our farms, but it is so powerful at the same time.  After the rains on Monday, I checked our rain gauge to find water at the 3 inch mark.  That's a lot of rain in a short period.  Some of our other farms didn't get quite as much but still received enough to water their fields.  Thankfully this storm didn't do much damage except when the wind caught one of our chicken tractors, and that was easily repaired.

It's time to harvest fresh honey on our farms.  Did you know that honey never spoils?  It will crystallize, but it has antibacterial properties that prevent mold.  Both Hazy Hollow Farm and Humble Bee and Tree Farm are currently harvesting summer honey.  It will be available in the next couple of weeks after they get it bottled.

From Glacial Till Farm:  This is always an interesting time of year on the farm. Summer crops are coming into full production while early succession crops are being transitioned. Every bed in this photo is now seeded in cover crops in preparation for next year’s production.  Fresh lettuce is still 1-2 weeks away since the extended heat wave damaged so much of it.

Packing Errors:  We apologize for any packing errors this week.  One of our regular packers was on vacation, so we had a few more errors than usual.  If you were missing anything in your box or if an item was damaged, please let me know and we will issue a credit for that item.

On behalf of your farmers,
