Weekly winter CSA pickups from now until April 20th

Posted on February 25th, 2023 by Dave Redfearn

Ok, no more confusing, week-on, week-off CSA pickups.  We've got weekly pickups from now until the last pickup of the season on April 20th.  We're to the point in the year (early March) when things start growing quickly and we have enough to harvest every week.

You won't believe how beautiful everything looks in the greenhouses now.  Things can start looking a little sparse and haggard in the dead of winter, of course we also start looking a little haggard ourselves about that time. But now, in the greenhouses at least, spring has started to arrive.  Outdoors it's still winter, but there is enough day length and solar heat gain in the tunnels that spring starts early there.  So we've torn out older crops and replaced with fresh ones so that we'll have extra nice crops these next several weeks.

We are having to take a week off of lettuce this week because of a timing issue with the new transplants, but we should be back on track for lots of lettuce mix next week.  This week instead, we've got lots of really nice kale salad mix, which is one of our favorite salad blends of the year. It's something we can't grow in the summer and only get a chance to enjoy in winter.  Let us know what you think of that.

We have spinach coming out our ears right now and boy is it tasty.  I just can't stop munching on it whenever I walk by, and since we have it planted all over the place, that's about everywhere I go!  The spinach is especially sweet now because it's gone through lots of sub-freezing temperatures and put extra sugars in the leaves to protect them from damage.  That means they're extra tasty, but also not quite as pretty looking as they could be.  We try our best to sort out yellow-tipped leaves, but they're going to be in there.  Just know that those blemishes won't hurt the taste but are actually evidence that they'll be extra tasty and sweet.

We're celebrating #CSAWeek this week, so please share our posts if you see them on socials.  And if you don't do that sort of thing, good for you.  You're probably better off for it!  We wouldn't be on there if we didn't need to reach new and old customers, and if Grandma didn't always want us to "like" her photos of our kids when she posts them:).  Oh well, I guess there are redeeming qualities if you find them.
