Farm Happenings for February 16, 2023

Posted on February 11th, 2023 by Dave Redfearn

We're back for another delivery of awesome freshness.  Feb 16th will be our last winter CSA delivery in February.  One more week off the following week to let the veggies grow back and then we'll be back to WEEKLY CSA deliveries starting March 2nd.  That's right, we'll be back to weekly CSA deliveries from March 2nd to April 20th.  I know it's harder to keep track skipping weeks.  We just need to give the greens time to grow.

We are clearing space in the high tunnels and refreshing with newly planted crops so we can have a strong end to the winter CSA with lots of young baby greens.

And of course we're already making preparations for summer crops with our first pepper and tomato transplants being started by our good friends at Sullivan's Greenhouse.  They've been helping us out with a good portion of our spring transplants the last couple years.  (We keep our small greenhouse full of transplants all year round, so we don't have room for all the extra plants we need in spring).  Sullivan's is a wonderful family-owned greenhouse and they produce wonderful transplants without chemical pesticides.  If you are looking for good plants for your own garden, you will be able to find their transplants this spring at a lot of local nurseries and they even set up and sell directly to customers at the Overland Park Farmer's market.

Last week we seeded our newest high tunnel with spinach and carrots for the beginning of the summer CSA.  It's exciting to have a little more space to get a head start on these highly desirable spring crops.  That's high tunnel number 7 in operation for us.  That means we now have more than 2/5ths of an acre of growing space under cover.  This allows us to keep the greens coming all winter and helps us produce those yummy summer crops in summer.
