Winter CSA starts this week!

Posted on October 15th, 2022 by Dave Redfearn

You are receiving this email because you are signed up for our winter CSA which starts Thursday (October 20th).  The details of your selected pickup location including address and times were on your confirmation email.  You'll also receive those details each week on Wednesdays when you receive your share confirmation email.  If you are new to using Harvie or a want to get better at it, here's a quick tutorial on how you can view your upcoming deliveries, make changes, etc.

We're excited to get started with this new season.  I'm including some of the main winter CSA season info for your reference.

  • The 2022-2023 Winter CSA season will start the week of October 20th.
  • There will be a total of 20 deliveries during the 6 month winter season.
  • Weekly October 20th to December 15th (with no pickup Thanksgiving week).  After a 2 week Christmas and New Year's gap, we'll have every other week deliveries in January and February (Jan 5, Jan 19, Feb 2 and Feb 16th) Then back to weekly deliveries again for March and April with the final delivery for the winter season April 20th.
  • Pickup locations (unlike summer, most of these are porch pickups so if you miss your share it won't be stored at the farm to pick up later.  Farm pickups and Friday self serve at the farm will be kept until the following Tuesday like we do for summer but all other shares that aren't picked up become the property of our wonderful site hosts):
  • Here are all the available locations for your information.
  • Farm Pickup (26355 E Bundschu Rd. Independence, MO) – Thursdays 3:00PM to 6:00PM
  • Farm Friday Self Serve – Fridays 7:00AM to 7:00PM
  • Brookside (6012 McGee St, KC)– Thursdays 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM
  • Prairie Village (7311 Birch Street)– Thursdays 3:00 PM to 6:30PM
  • Overland Park (12700 W. 118th, OP)– Thursdays 3:00PM to 6:30PM
  • SW Lee’s Summit (1507 SW 8th Terrace, LS) – Thursdays 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
  • Lakewood (308 Northeast Chelmsford Court, LS)– Thursdays 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM

For us winter has already begun.  We've already had three frosts here at the farm.  We're also expecting hard frosts Monday and Tuesday to hit all of the Kansas City area, so we weren't too far ahead of the rest of the city with regard to the end of the growing season.  But the end of the growing season is just the beginning of our winter growing season.  Even with frosts, we continue to grow great things outside.  The outdoor fields are full of luscious vegetables that we'll be covering to protect during these fall frosts.  The greenhouses are also full of plants that are destined to feed us through the deep winter when the outdoor ground freezes up and we can no longer continue outdoor harvests.  We feel set up really well for a great winter season and we're so glad you are joining us!

We are doing some large harvests of peppers from the last of the outdoor plants and unheated tunnels, so we have a lot of Italian Sweet peppers, and the last of the Bell Peppers and Spicy Peppers for this week! Additionally, there will be larger bags of imperfect Italian Sweet Peppers that are wrinkled that would be perfect for chopping and freezing.

Bread and Cheese

So we really need a few more bread orders each week to make this bread share sustainable.  We get the bread delivered fresh from the bakery every Thursday morning before we box up your shares.  But there is a minimum delivery total charge and we don't have enough bread share members to make it to that threshold.  This means we'll be losing money on the bread shares unless several people order bread each week or more of you sign up for the bread share to get us to that threshold.  We do the bread shares and make the bread available as a service to you all.  Please keep this in mind as you make your orders each week.  If you'd like to add a weekly bread share option, just let us know and we can do that for you.  We'll be monitoring the situation and determine whether or not we may need to discontinue the bread shares and bread add on options at a later point in the season.  We hope you understand.

Bread: Farm to Market Great Grains Sliced loaf

Cheese: Hemme Brother's Garlic Herb Curds

Thanks so much for eating with the seasons with us!  We feel so blessed to be your farming family.
