Second to Last Winter CSA shares

Posted on April 9th, 2022 by Dave Redfearn

It's hard to believe but the winter CSA is almost at an end.  The final CSA deliveries will be April 21 and 22nd, so there will be one more share after this coming share.  We hope you've enjoyed the off-season locally grown food.  We really appreciate you being part of keeping the farm running all winter long!  Thanks!

This spring is the coolest we can recall since we started farming.  It isn't exceptionally cold, just consistently below average keeping the soil temperature lower than normal and really slowing down the growth for anything planted outdoors.  We're still harvesting almost exclusively from our high tunnels because everything outside is growing in super-slow motion.

The peas and carrots are barely up after almost 5 weeks in the ground!  We're already at our average date of last frost for the area and we have several more frosts projected in the 10-day forecast.  Add to that the fact that our farm tends to be 5-8 degrees colder than forecast and we're looking at quite a while before we are out of frost danger.  It's this kind of spring that compels us to build more tunnels.  You can hardly believe the difference even an unheated structure protecting from extra cold nights and biting wind, and warming so much in the afternoon sun can do to plant growth in spring!

Farmer's Market this coming Saturday 4/16

We'll be at the Overland Park Farmer's Market starting next Saturday.  The OP Farmer's Market is returning to the EXPANDED Pavilion Site at 7950 Marty St. We'll be bringing limited quantities of fresh produce there each week, however our focus is on our CSA members.  Given the cold spring and the impending start to the summer CSA on 4/28, we won't be bringing tremendous amounts for sale there.  We do need to honor our commitment to the market however especially since so many other farmers are also struggling to grow anything this spring.  If you want visit with Sheri, she'll be at the market starting a week from today!

MEAT!

Katie Farrar will be at the farm this week with preorders for pastured meats.  You can visit there site now to order for pickup at our farm or at many other metro locations. https://farrarfamilyfarmkc.com/   They also do a meat CSA with monthly selections of various meats.  You should also check out your options and get on their mailing list so you know when they have openings in their CSA.  They'll be doing monthly deliveries at our farm throughout the summer as well to coincide with our CSA delivery dates.
