Summer Share: Week 19

Posted on October 7th, 2021 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

This Week's Highlights: The coolers and packshed continue to fill with produce for the late fall and winter. This week, brought in the celeriac, rutabaga, and Gilfeather turnsips. We also finished up the winter squash harvest. Fields are getting tucked in for the winter - removing tomato trellising and taking down temporary electric fence.

What We're Cooking: The cooler weather is inspiring cozy, comfort food in our kitchen. A recent favorite meal was meatballs with mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, roasted delicata squash, and a side of cooked cabbage. The Thelmas Sanders squash is an heirloom acorn squash with a buttery texture and sweet potato flavor. It is so good! I (carefully) cut them in half, place them in a pan with a little water cut side down, and roast at 325 degrees until soft (~30-45 minutes depending on size). Eat as is or serve with some butter and cinnamon or coconut oil and garam masala.

From Our Farm Partners: The Driftless potatoes this week are red potatoes. I like to mix the yellow and reds when I make mashed potatoes.

In addition to the Aronia Juice from Hilltop Community Farm, we have Black Currant Jam with Honey available.

Apple share members will be receiving certified organic Winecrisp apples. Winecrisp apples are juicy, crisp, and sweet (but not too sweet).

Veggie Forecast: There is only one more week of the summer CSA season left, and the diversity of produce available is amazing. Week 20 will have greens, winter squash, cabbages, broccoli, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, rutabaga, leeks, carrots, and salad turnips. We will also have mushrooms available from Hidden Valley.
