Officially Spring!

Posted on March 22nd, 2023 by Conrad Cable

Good evening! All orders this week contribute solely to our Spring seed order. It's one of our biggest expenses of the year, and we could really use a good farm stand week so that we can place our order and get those seeds in the ground ASAP! If you haven't ordered from us in while, THIS IS YOUR WEEK! We are out of carrot seeds, low on lettuce, plus we need cover crops, legumes, and so many Summer crops that must be planted soon.

This Week

We have an amazin' farm stand for you this week! Spring is officially here! Incredible harvests are happening every week, including our first round of beautiful lettuce planted in mid-January. All of our salad mix options are on the inventory. There's also a long list of leafy greens like collards, mustard greens, rainbow chard, braising greens mix, and more! We have some specialty crops like bok choy and Napa cabbage up for grabs too, plus radishes and salad turnips. Don't forget your pasture-raised eggs from 3 Board Farms!

Farm Update

It was a fitting end for this Winter season to culminate with one last freeze. Tuna and I worked until dark on Saturday, covering the most vulnerable crops like squash, beans, lettuce, and salad greens. I wish we had more time on Saturday, because we suffered frost nip that night on our rainbow chard, kohlrabi, and young broccoli. The plants all survived, but I really don't like having to clear off all of the damaged leaves--it's just like harvesting, except we don't get paid!

We worked a 10 hour day on Sunday. I'm so grateful for our friends Ben and Jacob for helping us out, or there is no way we could have covered the entire farm before sunset. It's best to have all of the row cover deployed before 4 PM, so that the trapped heat can begin to warm the ground while the sun is still shining.

This week, we directly sowed around a dozen, 100 foot rows with spinach, arugula, mustards, Asian greens, turnips, radishes, fennel and dill. We planted 500 broccolis, and around 2000 heads of lettuce. We only have one harvest day a week right now, as opposed to three, so it's been great to not be so rushed while checking off our to-do-list.

Sourcing locally grown food, planning your meals, and preparing them is a lot of work! Thank you all for going the extra mile and supporting our farm. You always make us feel so appreciated, and that makes working long days like last weekend go by so much easier!
