The Farm Fly-over

Posted on October 22nd, 2021 by Conrad Cable

Good afternoon members!

Lots of tasty vegetables are on for this week! New in the shares we have purple kohlrabi! Kohlrabi is in the mustard family, which makes it cousin to broccoli, kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. The leaves and stems are used as a cooking green, while the base is peeled, cubed, and then cooked. The base is most similar to tender broccoli stems when cooked (yes, I cooked kohlrabi and cheese and it slapps). Next, watermelon radishes are on for the next few weeks! Green on the outside, bright pink on the inside, these are stunning when sliced thinly with a veggie peeler. The last new item this week is Italian basil! Due to the sensitive nature of this crop post-harvest, I didn't want anyone to get disappointed if their basil went bad quickly. Basil is available for swap or add on, but will not be automatically added to the shares. Just know that it is going to be optimal to prepare (pesto), or consume the basil within two days of receiving it.

If you are between shares, would like to sample some of our jam, or just want to hang out with the coolest farmers you know, then please visit us at a farmers market this week! Saturday from 9-1 we are at the Ruston Farmers Market, and on Thursday from 5-8 PM we are at Grow the Roe next to Parish Restaurant. If you are in Monroe, you can also find our jams at Mercantile Monroe on Walnut St, downtown! Jackie has some cool vintage finds and we are excited about our first retail partnership.

My fiance is a professional photographer, and Emi had a chance to capture some cool drone footage of the farm this week. She hauled all of her equipment out to Marion, and spent an afternoon shooting our farm work. Emi recently decided to make Current Farms part of her graduate school thesis, and it feels great to know that she is our biggest supporter (and consumer of salad mix). The photos from the fly-over have brought about a much needed attitude change. I'm always pushing for the farm to expand, for us to grow more, or increase our varieties, but it was nice to see how far we have come. We have some drone photos of the pasture from 2017, and to see those stills side by side with the present put a lot in perspective. It has been a great lesson in taking a deep breath, and being grateful for where we are right now. We have accomplished so many things we didn't think were within our reach. The farm is paying our bills. I get to follow my passion. We have all of this amazing food to choose from. Our new team member has made the work week so much easier. Most of all, I think we are making positive impacts in our community around good, local food.

As always. thanks for supporting our farm. I hope you are excited to cook something delicious this week!

Sincerely,

Conrad Cable
