Only 4 Weeks Left!

Posted on March 25th, 2023 by Dave Redfearn

Only 4 weeks left including this week's delivery.  So we've got March 30, April 5, April 13 and April 20th as the remaining weeks of the winter CSA.  Thanks so much for being a winter vegetable warrior!  Has it been challenging to find constructive uses for all those roots and greens?  Tough part about the late winter and early spring CSA is also the good part: GREENS!  Those greens are incredibly good for you.  The average American doesn't eat nearly enough green leafy vegetables, but you aren't an average American.  Not if you're part of the winter CSA, you aren't.

Leafy green vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. They’re packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber but low in calories.

Eating a diet rich in leafy greens can offer numerous health benefits including reduced risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and mental decline. (Healthline.com)

So good for you for being one of those people and helping our farm survive to produce more for others and even donate large quantities of fresh produce including greens to people who couldn't otherwise afford them!

On the farm

We've had some nice rain, now we need things to dry out a bit.  Since we do most of our work with hand tools and lightweight walk behind tractors, we can get out to work in the fields when most farmers can't.  If you drive heavy equipment into muddy fields, you'll ruin soil structure and cause compaction.  But we've already formed many our spring beds and those beds are raised 6 to 8 inches above grade and composed of a high percentage of organic matter to allow them to dry quickly.  Even after these soggy rains, if the sun comes out and we get a little bit of wind, we should be able to get out there and do a lot of spring planting this week!  Which is super exciting!

Anything we'll be planting outdoors at this point will be going toward the early weeks of the summer CSA season.  You're winter CSA food is already all in the ground, mostly in the high tunnels.  But if you want to get the broccoli, cabbage, sugarsnap peas, etc you'll need to secure your summer CSA share.  We're getting pretty close to capacity for the summer season so we want to make sure you don't miss out if you intended to continue into the summer with us.
