Farm Happenings for May 21, 2020

Posted on May 16th, 2020 by Dave Redfearn

The greens are really coming in right now!  Don't worry, the warm season stuff is in the ground and growing, it's just that the cool spring has slowed things down a bit!  One thing about eating with the seasons is learning to enjoy food in it's prime!  During this time of year, the greens are at their peak.  By mid summer, you'll be wishing for spinach, but it doesn't grow in summer.  Now is the time to blanch and freeze those greens because we won't be seeing greens like this again until late fall.

We really dodged a bullet with the rain forecast this past week.  Since it held off so long, we were able to get a lot of planting done.  Most of the outdoor tomatoes are in the ground as well as the peppers and the first outdoor round of zucchini and green beans!  We also planted some fun pole beans: purple, yellow and yard long beans!  We planted based upon the forecast that said this was going to be a warm week in the high 70's and 80's but now that they've reduced those highs 10 degrees we may need to throw some quick mini greenhouses over them to warm up the soil enough to sprout them before they rot in the ground!

Ok, so we're going to test our abilities to throw in extra products from other farms this week for purchase.  We've got some Hemme Brothers cheeses.  Great farmers.  If you haven't met David Hemme, he's a hoot!  His 4 sons and their families run the farm.  They pasture their cows and grow their own feed AND they make amazing cheese!  This week it's smoked cheddar and cheese curds.  They've got some amazing fresh Mozzarella that we were going to wait to offer until we have tomatoes, but it's so stinking good we may have to get some for next week.

These obviously aren't items from our farm so they aren't included in any of your shares but you can purchase them as extras if you'd like. All of us local farmers are struggling to find ways to get our products to customers (thanks again for helping us solve that problem for our farm by being an incredible CSA member!), so we'd like to offer various products from other farm friends from time to time.  Hopefully that will add value to you and help out another one of our farmer friends in the process.

Have a great day!
