Summer Share: Week 13

Posted on August 27th, 2021 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

This Week's Highlights: This week was a blur! Our worker share crew helped weed our fall brassicas. We planted a round of cover crops before the rain. Summer squash harvest is done, melon harvest is coming to a close, and tomato harvest has reached its peak. We will be starting winter squash harvest soon, with spaghetti squash being the first variety to be ready.

What We're Cooking: Tomatoes dominate meals this time of year. Salads, sandwiches, pasta. Cherry tomatoes are best for snacking. The cocktail tomatoes are a mix of smaller orange and red fruits - perfect for slicing in half or quarters for salad. The heirlooms are beautiful and bountiful. We grow 4 large varieties (some of the tomatoes are more than 1.5 pounds!) - Aunt Molly's Green, Pruden's Purple, Striped German, and Cherokee Purple.

Veggie Forecast: This is probably the last week for watermelon. We have one, maybe two, more weeks of cantaloupe.

We're working on some fun partnerships for the rest of the season. Next week, we'll have aronia juice and jam from Hilltop Community Farm in LaValle available. Later in the season, we'll have potatoes available from Driftless Organics in Soldiers Grove, cranberries from SunDance Cranberries in Necedah, as well as an organic apple share from Two Onion Farm in Belmont. Stay tuned for more details!
