As we enter November, we're preparing for the last field planting of the year. We'll be planting 2021's garlic crop this week. Each garlic bulb is broken down into cloves. We till the soil and plant each clove (root side down) 9 inches apart. The garlic beds will be mulched with straw. In the spring, we'll patiently await the melting of the snow and the emergence of the garlic. The growing season marches on!
The hoophouse feels like a tropical paradise on cold, sunny days. Full of many shades of green - we'll (hopefully) be enjoying these greens deep into the winter.
In our kitchen, we've been savoring the leeks. They are the star of comforting meals! Last night, I made a side dish of basmati rice cooked in chicken broth with sauteed leeks and shredded brussels sprouts. I finished the dish with garlic powder, salt, pepper, and some heavy cream. It was the perfect dish - Fresh, yet rich, cozy and filling.
As most of our members know, we are using Harvie's auto-renew feature to reserve our 2020 members shares before sign up opens to the general public. (Auto-renew also helps, us, your farmers plan and prepare for the upcoming growing season.) Spring and summer shares have already renewed, and we plan to run auto-renew for the fall share on November 30th. You will receive more communication about auto-renew in the coming weeks.
