Summer Share: Week 17

Posted on September 19th, 2020 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

What a beautiful week! We've been watching the weather closely, but haven't had a frost yet. We still have lots of crops in the field. Most crops are loving the cooler temperatures - like the brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and kale. Our last planting of yellow wax beans are flowering, and there are baby beans out there! (You can see the bed of beans in this week's picture.) We harvested the last of the winter squash, hot peppers, and tomatoes and half of the sweet potatoes. This weekend, we'll be wrapping up planting in the greenhouse. Salad mix, spinach, baby beet and chard greens, and mesclun mix for the fall share will enjoy the sunny week ahead!

We are excited about the shift to late summer produce. Carrots, beets, and cabbage have arrived in the shares. Microgreens are back. Cauliflower and broccoli are trickling in. Leeks will be appearing in the next two shares. Sweet potatoes will be in week 19 and 20 shares. Much to look forward to!

The cone-headed, sweetheart cabbages in this week's shares are tender, delicate, and sweet. It is perfect in raw preparations, but I do love it braised, as well. We also enjoy cabbage soup in our house. Who else is excited about the return of soup weather?

The shift in weather has us planning and looking forward to the fall share and the 2021 growing season. This week, fall share members will be receiving communication about add-on shares. All CSA members will be receiving communication about reserving your shares for 2021 in the coming weeks. Have a lovely weekend.

Your Farmers,
Craig and Lauren
