Summer Share: Week 10

Posted on July 31st, 2020 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

Peak summer produce! Watermelon, tomatoes, sweet corn. Watermelon harvest usually happens in a trickle. This year, all of our watermelons were ready at once! Thankfully, they hold well at 50-59 degrees, and we plan to have them in the shares for the next couple of weeks. This week, the watermelons are a beautiful yellow variety.

Sweet corn, on the other hand, has been disappointing. After a couple of years of little to no worm damage on our sweet corn, the corn earworms found our first succession of sweet corn. We did our best to sort out the damaged ears. We apologize if you find a worm! (Just think of them as one of our organic inspectors.) You will find Damaged Sweet Corn under "Extras" for sale. These ears are half-price - with plenty of good corn on the ears. The ends are damaged by the worms, and there is a good chance you might find one hitching a ride.

Summer squash and zucchini season is nearing it's end. If you are still searching for ways to enjoy these seasonal delights - look to this Bon Appetit article for inspiration. The two methods we use for cooking zucchini: high heat (broiling, roasting, and grilling) and slow-cooking (until it is jammy and sweet - then we toss with pasta and fresh tomatoes). I've also found a new favorite zucchini bread recipe that relies solely on honey as a sweetener - Zucchini Cardamom Bread. Not a fan of cardamom? It is great with cinnamon, too.
