Summer Share: Week 8

Posted on July 18th, 2020 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

This week brings many new crops - new potatoes, summer carrots, cabbage, torpedo onions, celery. We are picking the first of the cherry tomatoes, and we hope to have some in week 8's shares. We dug the first bed of summer carrots this week. They are sweet, petite, and tender. Next week, we'll be digging a bed of rainbow carrots for upcoming shares. They look beautiful!

We plan to harvest our garlic this week. The bulbs are pulled and tied into bunches. We hang them in our greenhouse to cure, and we'll be enjoying fresh garlic soon! We'll be harvesting the first beans - yellow wax beans - this coming week, and beets are on their way, too.

The new potatoes have very delicate skins. You will be receiving them in a plastic bag with the soil still on them. You can store them with the soil on and just wash them before you cook them. I rinse them in a colander under running water and rub them with my fingers to loosen any stubborn bits of mud. Be sure to store the celery inside of a produce bag to keep it crisp. I cut off the leaves and put them in a bag in the freezer for adding to broth and soups.
