Summer Share: Week 3

Posted on June 15th, 2019 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

We're continuing to have a bounty of salad greens. This spring-like weather is great for our salad mix and spinach! We've been enjoying huge salads, and the spinach often ends up sauteed (and added to eggs, pasta, or enjoyed on its own).

We're (im)patiently awaiting the ripening of our strawberries. In most years, we would begin our strawberry harvest this week. There are the first few blossoms on our first planting of peas, and we have been working to keep up with their trellising.

Each year has it's challenges. We've had a lot of pest pressure this spring. Coupled with cool weather, the summer crops are having a difficult time taking off. We cover them with row cover - to give them a little more heat and a layer of protection from pests (like flea beetles in broccoli and cucumber beetles in our summer squash, melons, and cucumbers). The cool weather has been lovely for your farmers to work in, but your produce could use some heat!
