Summer Share: Week 2

Posted on June 7th, 2019 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

It finally feels like June. We're nearing the end of spring, and the plants in the field are loving the heat. Strawberries are beginning to set fruit, and the pea plants are reaching tall. Crops, like winter squash, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, tomatoes, and peppers, are all planted and enjoying the sunshine.

This second summer share is full of variety. Carrots, chard, and kohlrabi are from the hoophouse. Bountiful greens are from the field, along with some gorgeous broccoli.

One of my favorite crops to harvest is broccoli. Each broccoli plant makes one head - with the head of the plant actually being a collection of flower buds. If we let the broccoli continue it's life cycle, each little bead on the broccoli head would grow up and open into a beautiful yellow flower. We harvest each head as they are ready, but the plant will continue to produce side shoots. Tender, delicious, and adorable, these little shoots are perfect for snacking. The stems are tasty, too, and add crunch and texture to salads and stir-fry.

Have a lovely weekend!

Craig & Lauren
