Farm Happenings for September 9, 2021

Posted on September 6th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 16! As we descend into the cooler days of fall, we still have lots to look forward to! We still have lots of summer veg this week, including the last of the melons, tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc., but are welcoming back cool weather crops like cabbage, salad mix, turnips, etc.

This week we are doing our big potato dig, transplanting the last outdoor crops for the year, and will start picking up winter squash!

We also have a new crew member, Emma, who is helping us get to the finish line of the season and I am so grateful for that!

More about Emma in her own words:

Name/Pronouns/Hometown:

Emma Rast, She/her/hers, Lancaster, PA

Seasons farming: This is my first season farming!

Why are you interested in farming?

Ever since I was small, planting peas and weeding with my mom, I have been a gardener. Over the pandemic my love of gardening and cooking with fresh foods only increased. So when I recently made a big move from North Carolina to Washington I felt it was the moment to take the big step from gardening to farming. I love spending all day outside with my hands in the dirt! And I feel so lucky to witness the transformation that occurs day after day on the farm.

Favorite vegetable: A very tough question but today (after spending several hours oven-roasting tomatoes) I can’t help but choose the ever-dependable tomato!

Future ambitions: Experiment with natural dyeing and create a quilt in the process, learn how to play bluegrass banjo, design my own knitted sweater, and become a better cook/baker.
