Farm Happenings for September 16, 2021

Posted on September 13th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to week 17! This is the last week for CSA bouquets!

Wow, can you really feel the changing of the seasons this week. One of the greatest pleasures on farming for me is that I can spend my days outside and can intimately know this piece of Earth. Being outside all the time affords opportunities to observe the many mini seasons that happen throughout the year, like the fake out week of warm spring like weather in February, Spider Season in September, and noticing when certain migratory birds come and go. I trade freedom to travel to other parts of the world for knowing that stretch along the river with the best salmonberries, observing the field that dips a little and drys out the last each spring and usually is home to lots of frogs and salamanders, and spending my years with the same nesting eagle pair at the top of the neighbor's big leaf maple tree. These are the things that get me through years that are as brutal as this one.

With the forecasted 1.5 inches of rain this weekend (!!) we are hustling this week to bring the rest of the potatoes and all of the winter squash from the fields, and picking all of the outside tomatoes (still have two tunnels full of tomatoes, so its not good bye yet.) This way, we can seed cover crop on these areas and begin to get our garlic patch for 2022 ready for planting in October.

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK FOR CSA BOUQUETS! We hope you have enjoyed the blooms this season.

If you have any paper cartons (pint or quart sizes) or any freezer packs and would be able to return those, we would really appreciate it!

Crops:

Last call for: cucumbers, melons, sauce tomatoes! Nearing the end for zucchini! Last round of beans are coming in after we saved them from the deer.

We have watermelon this week and next week! Probably the best year of my life for melons and we hope you have been enjoying them.

Brussel Sprout Tops are here! These are the tops of the brussel sprout plants that we must pinch off in order for the sprouts to size up. These are kinda like mini collard greens or giant sprouts and are a great preview to sprout season.

Spinach and cabbage are back! Ripe sweet peppers are really coming on now! Salad mix is tasting really delicious again with these cooler days!
