Farm Happenings for August 12, 2021

Posted on August 9th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to week 12!

We are once again preparing for a hot week ahead! The humans and plants definitely enjoyed this cool and cloudy weather from this past weekend.

All of our crew was out over the last week, but I'm hoping everyone returns this week, refreshed and ready to go for the rest of the season. So much bean picking to do!

Hope everyone has been enjoying the shares, and I wanted to shout out a couple of my favorite cooking resources:

Dishing Up the Dirt/Local Dirt- The cookbooks and blog by Andrea Bemis, who is also a small veg farmer in the Hood River area. Simple, tasty recipes that are veg focused and flexible, depending on what you have on hand!

Six Seasons- Joshua McFadden. Probably our favorite chef/farmer cookbook? And you have definitely had his kale salad or a variation of it at a restaurant somewhere in the PNW and beyond.

Vegetable Kingdon- Bryant Terry. Veg forward southern soul food is one of my favorite ways to eat. I love the Charred Lemon and Spinach Sauce (although I use whatever green we have on hand; its great with kale and parsley) and often use it as a dipping sauce of roasted veg.

Crops this week:

Lots of eggplants coming in this week! We have Italian and a couple types of Asian eggplant. This has been kinda a difficult crop to grow in this this area, but we are happy to have it back this year.

Fennel- this has been a great batch of summer fennel! Shaved fennel salad? I made some quick pickled fennel/kolhrabi/carrots/onions and have been eating it on cheese sandwiches for lunch.
