Farm Happenings for July 29, 2021: Hot Sheep Summer

Posted on July 26th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 10! Lots happening on the farm these days, with lots of harvesting and planting on the veggie side and weaning lambs on the sheep side of the farm.

In case you missed it, you can reserve whole and half lambs now! More info and reserve yours here. Our animals are rotationally grazed for the health of the animals and land and will be available in December. If you have been enjoying the lamb sausage, consider getting a whole or half lamb and stock up for the winter! We also have some lovely sheepskins that we recently got back from the tannery that will bring more hygee into your life.

In more sheep news, we separated out the ram lambs from the ewe flock and put the mamas out on some tall, less nutritious grass to help them dry up and get their pre baby bodies back. We are also making improvements to the sheep handling area this year, thanks to a grant from FACT (Food Animal Concern Trust) that will streamline any time we need to work the sheep and help reduce any stress on the animals. We are really proud to get this grant as it prioritizes the humane and healthy treatment of animals.

The first step is to the muck out the sheep shed and we built a massive 18 ton compost pile yesterday that will be the basis of our vegetable fertility program for next season! We also periodically receive leaves from landscaping companies and excessive aquatic vegetation that is being removed from creeks and rivers in Pierce County and incorporate them into our compost.

Crop highlight:

Beans! Our "green bean" mix is actually 6-7 different types of beans that make for a beautiful rainbow mix. We handpick them every 3 days for the best quality and hope you enjoy them! Tell us your favorite bean from the mix, if you have any strong feelings.
