Farm Happenings for July 22, 2021

Posted on July 19th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Hello and welcome to week 9!

As we move into peak harvest season, we are also doing a huge planting push this week. Lots of fall brassicas (kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc) and chicories are going in the ground this week, in addition to more getting seeded in the greenhouse for the winter and next spring! Spring treats like purple sprouting broccoli and overwintered cauliflower take something like 210-260 days to mature.

Tomatoes have arrived, after a couple weeks of trickling in. You may get cherry or slicing tomatoes this week as we have a smaller quantity of each right now. Peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos coming soon! Despite our efforts, some plants dropped blossoms (and as a result, will not make fruits) during the heat wave, so we may experience uneven inventory of product as the plants recover.

Thanks for everyone for sticking with us after a difficult month. Between the heat, irrigation/mechanical troubles, farm internet being taken out by a truck, pick up location changes, and labor shortages, this was probably the most difficult month of farming I have experienced in the last ten years. I end up working a lot of 16 hour days this time of year and greet the moon as I head in for a late dinner each night, see image. I have a renewed love of farming this time of year as we mow all of our spring troubles away and try many of those crops again for the fall.
