Fall Farmin' Fun

From the Field This Week

We are adding bunches of both purple daikon radishes and scallions to the share inventory this week. I think these purple daikon are one of the most beautiful vegetables that we grow! I also love eating them raw, roasted, or as a pickle. Here’s an easy recipe that I use for the daikon+carrot pickles. You don’t even have to use carrots, the daikon still have a great taste on their own. I love pairing roasted roots with a side of sour cream and fresh dill!

Add-ons

We also found a second regenerative farm, Greener Pastures to provide the same high quality eggs as we get from 3 Board Farm! 3 Board Farm is always our number one choice for eggs, but it’s also important to make sure that everyone who wants eggs in their farm share can get them!

I’m going to add different jams every week. This week you can add pear/honey jam, mayhaw watermelon jam, muscadine watermelon jam, and blackberry pear jam. I'm also adding pickles, marinara sauce, and elderberry syrup.

Next Week

We could see the return of the colorful bunches of daikon radishes. I’m really keeping an eye on a variety of fast growing baby carrots. I’m hoping they will be ready for Thanksgiving.

Farm Update

Last Monday, we planted an entire field block right before the rain arrived. The transplants are looking good, and the above average temperatures gave us a good germination on the directly sown crops. Each week we are continuing our plantings for the early Spring. In the next few weeks we will plant sugar snap peas. Those were such a big hit that we are trying a larger, earlier planting for an extended harvest window.

Kaden has been diligent about handling our rabbit problem. He's bagged 20 in the past few weeks. We have a deer fence around the farm, but the rabbits fit through the panels, and have even chewed through chicken wire we attached to the bottom of the fence. With the drought, the have been flocking to our fields from the smell of fresh water used while irrigating. They are are a very costly problem for us, and he is seeing more every time he walks the property line.

The last farm happening was lengthy, so I didn't give a shout out to all of our awesome pick up spots! Small business owners like The Good Daze, Medina Market, Tonore's Wine Cellar, Smith Family Farm and 3 Board Farm play such a crucial role in getting our produce to our farm share members. I am so grateful for the ways each of these awesome businesses support other businesses in our community!
