Winter Wind Down & When the Spring Farm Share Season Begins

Posted on March 1st, 2023 by Conrad Cable

It feels great to have all of our salad mix options back in stock! Spring mix is back, which is only lettuce, Asian greens, and rainbow chard. Our mesclun mix is so tasty right now with the addition of baby kale and ruby steaks mustard greens. And y'all know how good the salad and shoots mixes are! If you want some cooking greens, then the braising greens mix is stellar, plus we have and incredible harvest of baby bok choy this week! If you haven't tried the edible flowers, this week's mix is REALLY good.

Farm Update

It was a real scorcher this week! We didn't have any sunscreen at the farm, so I had to grab a bottle from my house. I have been working outside all year, but this week we really noticed the sun's intensity and I got my first sunburn of 2023. The plants and soil noticed as well, so we had to set up irrigation on our outdoor plantings. It feels great to already have our first round of carrots and beets growing for the next farm share season. Yesterday, we planted our second round of carrots and beets. We have double our carrot plantings and quadrupled the number of rows used for beets compared to last Spring. I think we have been growing a few too many leafy greens, so I'm really trying hard to plant more root crops, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, peas, beans and herbs. I'm hoping that in the Spring we can really work on diversifying harvests for all of you. In just a few months, we will be loaded with potatoes, squash, and lots of other warm season favorites.

There's just a few more deliveries left in this farm share season. To all of our members who joined during the Winter season, thank you so much for supporting our farm! I hope that you will consider auto-renewing for our Spring season, so that you can try even more of the many vegetables and fruits that we grow. I'm going to finish setting up the new season this afternoon, then Harvie will launch it ASAP. All of you will have a 2–3-week window where you can change the size, frequency, or pick up location of your share. Monroe folks remember that we now have pickups at Tonore's Wine Cellar, and in Ruston you can pick up from Wiley Tower at LA Tech. I'm setting the Spring farm share deliveries to begin the first week of April. The Spring shares will continue until the first week of July, so we will catch peach, plum, apple and berry season!

Between this the Winter and Spring farm share seasons, we will operate the farm stand on Harvie every week if you would like to receive vegetables during the break. You can also order on currentfarms.com. It's a great opportunity to clean out the refrigerator and buy some lackluster produce from the grocery to remind you of how awesome our vegetables are ha!
