Longer Days, Sweeter Carrots, Greener Greens

Posted on February 25th, 2022 by Conrad Cable

We have a great selection of produce this week! It’s the end of winter, and we are still harvesting lots of vegetables. You can choose from leafy greens, radishes, bok choy, microgreens, onions, plus the best dang carrots you’ve ever had!

Every day, we are working hard to start our spring farm shares by the beginning of April. There is so much to do between starting seeds and preparing beds, it’s easy to justify working from daylight until dark. This week, we planted all of our fruit tree cuttings from last year—figs, blackberries, blueberries, and some pears!

Whew! It feels really good to be on the exit from winter. The best farm feeling ever is a really good germination on a directly down crop. With the increase in sunlight and temperatures, it’s really going well! Each week we are planting around 10 rows. Next week, begins our mad transplanting dash, when we will transplant tens of thousands of crops between now and July. It’s a never ending process of seeding, transplanting, and harvesting, but it’s good to move, get in a groove, and enjoy the freedom of our profession!

I have a funny story for y’all! Tuna and I attempted to install the plastic covering over a new caterpillar tunnel. We attached one end and secured it—suddenly a gust of wind hit. I was on the ground, having just tied the plastic to the post. Tuna was on my left, standing on the plastic. The gust was so fast, the plastic lifted Tuna off the ground and threw him against the farm’s perimeter fence. I looked over, and the plastic was suction cupped around his entire body, with the end folding over the top of the fence. He literally looked like frozen Han Solo from Star Wars. His hands failing to press the plastic away from his body. At the time, it wasn’t that funny, because the plastic was ripped by the barbed wire, but at the end of the day, we had a good laugh about it all!

I hope you have a great week, and thank you for choosing to buy locally grown food!
