Persephone's Return

Posted on November 12th, 2021 by Conrad Cable

Good afternoon!

I hope you all are ready for some incredible vegetables this week! This week, we are offering sunflower shoots for the first time. If you have never tried them, they're sure to become a new favorite! I love them in any salad. These shoots have the ability to become a go to sandwich topping, or are a great snack by themselves! We harvested some of the first endive this week, so that means that mesclun mix is here! Also known as frisee, endive is a bitter green, with green leaves and a white stem, that looks similar to lettuce. However, it has much more flavor and crunch. Our mesclun mix is based on a French recipe using endive, lettuce, arugula, and mustard greens. It's spicy and bitter, yet sweet and crunchy. It is available to swap, or add as an extra. The first heads of Fall broccoli are here! We only had a few size up this week. They haven't been added to any shares, so first few folks who want to swap can catch them early. The rest of the heads in the row should size up over the next few weeks. The broccolinis are shooting up great too! They will be in shares very soon.

We had an incredibly busy week preparing for our Winter growing season. Nearly every row has been planted, and next week we will sow some of the final seeds of 2021. November 30 is our Persephone Day, a term used in market gardening to mark the point when the sun's light falls below 10 hours a day. After this time, most plants go into survival mode, not growing mode. However, we continue to grow through this time. We plant fewer types of vegetables, but have to double the amount of space to each crop to account for their slow growth. Not many local farms here continue through February, but there are many rewards for the work, including the incredible tastes of frosty leafy greens.

Be sure to catch us at the Ruston Farmers Market on Saturday, or at the Flying Tiger Brewery Farmers Market on Thursday from 6-8 PM! We have lots of jams and jellies that make great gifts! It's getting time for Thanksgiving, and I sure am thankful for you supporting our farm.

Cook something tasty, ya'hear?!

Sincerely,

Conrad Cable
